HISTORY
of Russell Community Theatre, Inc.

In its beginnings, from 1976 to 1986, the Drama Committee of the Russell Arts Council produced thirty-one productions.  In 1986, Russell Community Theatre, Inc. was incorporated as a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit Kansas corporation .  The vast majority of productions have been presented in either Ruppenthal Middle School Auditorium or the Russell Elks Lodge.

In 1989, RCT purchased the building at 839 Main Street as an office, warehouse and shop.  Then, in 1992, the quarter block east of 839 Main was purchased as a possible site for a small theatre.

Most recently, in 2011, RCT purchased the First Baptist Church at the corner of 5th and Kansas streets. It was renamed "The Playhouse" and has been used as a performance space ever since.  Finally, we have been raising funds and performing construction to make the "Playhouse" ADA compliant and more "user friendly" for our patrons.

Twenty-five stockholders each hold one share of stock. The stockholders elect a seven-member Board of Directors annually. The Board, in turn, selects a chair and elects a president and secretary-treasurer as the corporate officers.
